A couple of months ago, a friend sent an email to Chris Potgieter (27), telling him to check out a website called SAReunited.com, designed for South Africans to find old school and varsity friends. Chris found that many of his Dundee school friends had already registered and made contact with a couple of old buddies, some living in London. He then referred the site to two of his friends, Heike Schroeder and Ilka van Rooyen.

By simply referring the site to his friends, Chris was eligible to win the R15 000 prize in the site’s “refer a friend and win” competition. When the founders of the site randomly drew Chris’ name as the winning member, they notified him via email. When two weeks went by and he still had not come forward to claim his prize (he was working on a remote construction site in the UK and not able to access his email) the founders gave it one last shot and emailed his friends from his year at Dundee High, asking them to help locate Chris and let him know that he was the winner. Chris was on a forklift at the time, “I started getting these sms’s from friends telling me I’d won all this cash, then Heike phoned me. First I thought it was a joke, then I nearly fell off my seat!” Within one hour of the email to his friends, Chris called the founders to claim his prize. “It just goes to show how powerful SAReunited has become”, say the co-founders. SAReunited has nearly 160 000 members, growing by over 3000 new members per week. As the SAReunited phenomenon spreads – the world becomes a smaller, friendlier place. A member recently found her biological mother after 40 years.
