Nelson Mandela spent 18 years imprisoned on Robben Island for crimes including sabotage as he continued to fight against apartheid. Robben Island has not only been used as a prison. It was also used in World War II as a defence station and for many years as a leper colony before becoming a maximum security prison in 1959. The three and a half hour tour includes a return trip across Table Bay, a visit to the Maximum Security Prison, interaction with an ex-political prisoner and a 45 minute bus tour with a guide providing commentary.
